VHS Course Description
Art 1 is a two-semester foundational course which provides students the opportunity to hone artistic skills, knowledge of and facility with academic art vocabulary and develop language skills required for critical and insightful discourse. Art 1 integrates the Elements of the Art and the Principles of Design to the art- making processes of creation, presentation, responding and making connections.
This is going to be a great year of art making. It’s more about the process than the end result, though you must demonstrate that you have learned and mastered certain drawing and painting techniques. Not everyone is or can be a master of art in the first day, week, month, or years of taking art BUT the effort and creative mind that you set for yourself will make all the difference. Promise to never say, “I can’t draw” because YOU CAN! You just need to practice. Sketching or doodling at home is great! Do it when you’re bored, watching TV, babysitting, sitting at the beach, taking public transportation, or traveling. The more you draw the better you’ll get.

Student Materials
Students are highly encouraged to have a sketchbook of some kind. Hardback or Molekines are great options. It does not have to be expensive. Sketchbooks can be found for great prices, especially at the beginning of the school year, at Blick Art stores, Aaron Brothers, Target, CVS, Michale's, JoAnn… Should be 8.5x11” Please don't purchase a "pad of paper." The glue strip will not last the year. Your sketchbook much be hardbound or spiral.
***Art Donation***
The Art Dept. thrives on having the best supplies possible including, paper, canvas, paints, brushes, pencils…etc. Please bring with you to school cash or a check for $50 to contribute to having all of the necessary supplies to have a successful and creative year! You may turn in your donation to Ms. Cessor in the student store at lunch or at snack. THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!
Classroom Expectations (Students)
- Be ready to learn when the bell rings
- Please be respectful, polite, and thoughtful to your peers, especially opinions and during discussions, class materials, and to your teacher.
- Put ALL materials and supplies back where you found them. Make sure that they are clean for the next user.
- It is your responsibility to be prepared for class and have all materials.
- You have wonderful and insightful ideas and opinions and we can’t wait to hear them. DO NOT copy/plagiarize anyone else’s ideas or opinions.
- Cheating/copying is absolutely NOT tolerated and will result in an F grade for the assignment. If you do agree with/like another’s opinion, SAY IT- just give proper credit to the original author and cite your facts.
I do not tolerate laziness in my classroom. DO NOT come to class and expect to sit in your seat doing nothing. If you think this will be an "easy A" class then you should consider taking another elective. There are some days when lectures are necessary on techniques, materials, artists, movements, or directions but most days are "studio work days". On these days, you are expected to start working and be self motivated to complete assignments and projects. I will walk around to help you and answer your questions. Daily effort and participation are worked into every assignment grade.
Classroom Rules
- ALL CLASSROOM SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS MUST BE CLEANED AND PUT BACK WHERE YOU FOUND THEM!!!
- Grooming and primping will be taken care of during break time, not in class
- Restroom passes will be given in emergencies only.
- Remain in assigned seat unless otherwise instructed.
- Be ready when the bell rings!
- NO LITTERING! Pick up all trash off the floor and make sure it gets into the trash. Please be mindful of recycling.
