Step 1: Experiment with The Pen nibs and India Inks
Step 2: Practice Pen and Ink Techniques with control
Create 4 rows of 7 boxes in your sketchbook.
Start with creating a very dark box using one of the pen and ink techniques. (Use your skills from the text portrait.)
Each box there after should be a little bit lighter until you reach the opposite box from the darkest.

Step 3: Practice Textures using only Pen
|
Trace both your hands in your sketchbook in LIGHT pencil.
Each finger should look like it is made up of different textures. Tips: 1. Don't just draw on top of your fingers. Use pen and ink techniques to round out each finger, meaning add value. 2. Try to make it look like that finger grew hair, or made up of bricks, or became sticky... |
Step 4: Brainstorm and sketch!

Step 5: Research and Plan your creature
- What does the skin feel like? (amphibious, furry, smooth, scale-like, soft?)
- Why does the skin feel like this? Where and how does it live? (deep sea, canopy of the Amazon, outer space, light years away, in a hut in the woods...)
- How does your creature breathe?
- Does it sleep at night, during the day, or not at all?
- What does it eat? How does it eat? Does it need to catch its food?
- How does it move? (slowly, scurries, runs, flies, quickly, crawls, slithers, walks, rolls...
- How big or small is this creature? (12 feet, 2 inches or 6 inches...)
- What are its social habits? (Does it live with its own kind? Alone? With one other?)
- What is its life cycle? (eggs, impregnates, mammal) How big is it when it’s born? What does it look like when it's born?
- Describe the physical appearance of your monster in FULL detail. What are its major body parts? Does it have ears? A nose? Phalanges? Toe nails? Teeth?
- What is its demeanor or behavior? (mean, scary, eerie, spooky, weird, intimidating)
- What kind of defenses does your creature have?
- Is your creature a predator or prey?
- Is your creature more animal, insect, or plant?
- What is your creature's relationship to humans?
**Still need help? Take a look at what past students have created. Keep in mind that past years' requirements may be different than this year's. Ask me questions for clarifications!
Step 6: Get your Creature approved
Step 7: Draw your creature in light pencil on watercolor paper
Step 8: Create a light ink wash over your monster where appropriate
Step 9: Fill in your creature with textures and value
